Welcome to SOUL!
The National Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center is located in Wilberforce, Ohio, adjacent to the campus of Central State University. Opened to the public in 1988, the museum provides engaging opportunities to explore African American history and culture from African origins to the present through a variety of programs, including exhibitions, publications, presentations by visiting scholars, oral and visual history projects, and adult and children's educational activities. Please contact the National Afro-American Museum at 937-376-4944 or 1-800-752-2603 x 114 for more information.
Exhibition Rationale
This exhibition is based on the premise that because the creative process is one of expression, it is possible to understand the history and culture of people by exploring the art they create. In its diverse forms – both visual and performing – art draws us into history and opens our eyes to historical events like no other endeavor.
Art is also a means by which the very soul of an individual, a people, or a culture is revealed. At this level, art provides a bridge by which we may cross from our own experience to that of others and back, along the way discovering our similarities, developing a respect for our differences, and in the end embracing the diversity of humanness.
Soul! showcases 120 works from the collections of the National Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center to provide opportunities to explore 200 years of African American history and culture. In them are celebrations of family and heritage; stories passed down through the generations; highly emotional expressions of the most deeply held convictions and perspectives; and often raw – and always compelling – cries against injustice.
Soul! invites you to look, consider, discover, and connect.
